Aggies prepare for Rita

Aggie bookstore shows classic 'Aggie engineering' when preparing for Hurricane RitaFortunately for the Houston/Galveston area Hurricane Rita weakened and veered north of it’s original projected path, but the Aggies in College Station were prepared if it came their way.

Loupot’s, the school bookstore, boarded up their windows in a fine example of Aggie Engineering. Aggie jokes don’t get much easier than this. This sure hasn’t been a very good week to be an Aggie, though I’m not sure there’s ever a good time for that.

Update

Just had a response from the bookstore forwarded to me in an email:

Our windows will not support the weight of plywood screwed into their frames - neither is there sufficient masonry wall surrounding them for an attachment. Therefore our contractor, suggested saving the store from a major cleanup and letting the glass go. It wasn’t a difficult decision to make!

I have no idea about it’s authenticity but it sure sounds like something an Aggie would say. They have a reason for everything.

Tsips: these are the same people that said that the Aggies do not know how to build a camp fire after the Bonfire Tragedy. Face it, Tsips are classless!

Actually, a Texas A&M student is the one who took the photos and started the whole thing but good try Matt. And after the bonfire tragedy many UT student groups and the university as a whole organized quickly and donated a ton of money to the victims.

Hate to break it to you Pat but there’s four different photos of different windows. Good try though buddy, and congrats on the hard fought victory over the mighty Baylor Bears yesterday.

Lets’ think about this for a minute, so if the outside windows can’t support the weight of the plywood; then the magical inside windows can? How was the plywood attached inside? With magical inside screws? Lady - the glass doesn’t support the weight of the opening, the window’s mullions do. If a force such as wind were to put pressure against the glass and inside plywood, causing the glass to shatter. The screws attaching the plywood would be pulled off in an instant. The plywood must be on the outside to suppress the force of the wind BEFORE it reaches the glass.
