Stewart Mandel’s bowl picks. He think the Horns top Arizona State 35-32, but I think the winner will have to score more than 35.

Super Bowl XLI

I know you have been eagerly waiting our expert opinions (yeah right) on who will win and who will cover in Super Bowl XLI.

I think this is actually a pretty interesting match-up, with Peyton’s offense going up against the great Bear’s defense. I think for the Bear’s to win they need to jump out to a fast start. With their offense, I really don’t see them being able to come back against the Colts. The Colts have proven they can recover from a slow start with their win against the Patriots, where they were down by 18 in the first half.

I see a close game in the first half with the Colts pulling away in the end. Feel free to add your own predictions.

The 2006-2007 NCAA bowl season kicks of tonight in sunny San Diego, where TCU faces Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl. Nothing too exciting for the first week of bowl games, at least until Florida State faces off against UCLA. It will be interesting to see how UCLA bounces back after their big win against USC, and we could possibly be watching Bobby Bowden’s last game as the FSU head coach. And hey, maybe we will get to see those hideous Oregon helments.

Well after the Texas loss to Aggy, it almost felt like the college football season was over. But… there are actually some good football games this weekend. I am really looking forward to seeing the Arkansas/Florida match-up to see if Florida can shake up the BCS Championship picture. Rutgers is playing West Virginia in a match-up that looked interesting a few weeks ago but now just seems kind of boring.

Nebraska is playing Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship, both of whom Texas beat earlier in the season. Doesn’t that just make you sick?

Texas gets a bye week at a much needed time for them, since Colt McCoy is still recovering from the stinger he suffered against Kansas St. There is some big action this week as #1 Ohio State hosts #2 Michigan, in what should be one of the biggest games of the year. As a college football fan you have to love these match-ups, and I am sure most of you will be tuned in to ABC at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday.

Some interesting games in the Big 12 this weekend. Will A&M’s biggest rival Baylor pull the upset on OU? Will Kansas St have a letdown game against Kansas. We will see.

A match-up all Texas fans will probably be watching is Louisville at Rutgers. If Rutgers can pull off the upset, Texas will sitting in a nice position to get a spot in the BCS National Championship game. Another big game this week is in the SEC, where Tennessee tries to bounce back after their LSU loss and goes heads up against Arkansas. Arkansas controls their own destiny in the SEC and will have to lose twice relinquish their lead over Auburn.

Texas travels to Kansas St and can clinch a spot in the Big 12 Championship with a win. And Texas Tech travels to OU. You remember what happened last time they played right?

Finally we get some good match-ups this week. West Virginia and Louisville face off in what has been a pretty anticipated battle. The winner of this game will probably get to determine their own destiny when it comes to the BCS National Championship.

There are some solid Big 12 match-ups as well. Texas of course plays Okie Lite, on TBS, which could spell trouble if you remember the last 2 games against them. Aggy is going heads up with Oklahoma, their second biggest rival to Baylor. And finally Missouri and Nebraska square off in a battle for the Big 12 North.

Not much of a weekend nationally as the the Oklahoma - Missouri game is the only game between two ranked teams this weekend. Lots of other interesting Big 12 match-ups this week too. I’m of course hoping Texas at Texas Tech is a dominating Texas win, but there’s a good chance it’s a high scoring, exciting game. Texas A&M is at their biggest rival Baylor in a game that’s been close the last several years, though the game doesn’t look like it’s even being televised.

The only big matchup this weekend is in the Big 12, with Texas and Nebraska battling it out up in Lincoln. If Texas can win this matchup they will set themselves up well to run out the rest of their games. Want to get pumped up about the Nebraska game, check out this video of the 1996 Big 12 Championship game.

One other game I am interested in is Iowa and Michigan. Iowa really dropped the ball last week losing to Indiana, but maybe that will make the Wolverines look past them and allow them to keep the game close.

One big matchup in the SEC and not much else. The Florida Gators go on the road to Auburn for one of several tough SEC tests they’ll have to pass if they want to reach the BCS championship game in January. That’s this week’s only game between two ranked teams. Michigan also has an important game in Happy Valley, while most people believe Ohio State will be the team to come out of the Big 10 the Wolverines are still undefeated and climbing the rankings.

Three big ones this weekend, two in the always fun Southeast Conference and of course the Red River Shootout (I hate calling it the Red River Rivalry) in Dallas between the Longhorns ans Sooners. If Texas can knock off their rivals from across the border, by the end of the weekend they could be in the driver’s seat for the Big 12 South title. If LSU upsets Florida, Texas is one step closer to rematch with Ohio State on January 8th. Lots of undefeated and one-loss teams and Saturday’s games could clear things up a little more.

Last week everyone was a winner. Thanks to the complete lack of any interesting matchups we both finished 12 - 0 for the week’s picks. The games this week (other than Texas vs. SHSU) should be a little tougher to pick. Biggest game of the week is easily #1 Ohio State at #13 Iowa in a Big 10 conference game. The Buckeyes will have to perform better than they did last week if they want to win on the road. In the Big 12, the most interesting game pits Texas Tech on the road against Texas A&M. The Red Raiders have owned the Aggies lately but neither team has looked impressive early in the season.

Louisville is in a dangerous spot this weekend playing at Kansas St coming off what might be their biggest win in school history. While the first “Game of the Year” of the year was last week, this week features several very interesting games. Seven games feature a pair of ranked teams facing off, including four matchups I’d classify as big games. I’ll be at the Texas versus Rice game, but I will definitely find a way to be in front of a TV for Michigan at Notre Dame and LSU at Auburn games at 2:30 CST.

The biggest game of the regular season goes down this Saturday when Texas hosts Ohio State. And since the AP moved Texas up to #2 today, this is the first meeting between the #1 and #2 teams during the regular season in 10 years. The only other big game of note this week is #19 Penn State taking on #4 Notre Dame. Let’s see if Notre Dame can play a little closer to their expectations.

Only a couple of games between ranked teams for the opening weekend. There’s a lot of talk about California giving USC a run this season in the Pac 10 and we’ll find out a little bit about the Bears as they have an early road test against Tennessee. The Vols have talent and should be improved from last season. The biggest game of the weekend doesn’t actually take place till Monday. Florida State and Miami face off in primetime in high definition on ABC. Both the Seminoles and Hurricanes finished below their fans’ expectations last season and are looking to rebound to become national title contenders once again.

Here’s our projections for how the first round of this Saturday’s NFL Draft will go down. After the first seven picks all hell breaks loose as Matt and I very greatly on who we think goes where. Just one of the many reasons why the NFL Draft is like Christmas and Opening Day rolled into one weekend for both NFL and college football fans.

We’ll have a little further analysis and thoughts on where the other Longhorns like David Thomas and Cedric Griffin will be headed in the next couple of days.

The 2005/2006 NCAA bowl season starts off a little slow as a lot of 6 win teams face off in mid-December. Hard to get excited Southern Missippi versus Arkansas State. Heck I didn’t even know there was an Arkansas State. The matchups get better after Christmas as everything builds towards the epic Texas - USC matchup in the Rose Bowl. Should be entertaining to watch 28 teams try to end the year with a win. Be on the lookout for more detailed previews from Bevo Sports for most of the games.
